Museveni Commissions Karis Medical Hospital & Nursing University in Gayaza
The private-sector-led project will create over 1,000 jobs and boost Uganda’s health-training capacity.
President Museveni hails private investment as he commissions the Karis Medical Hospital & Nursing University — a 125-bed facility set to transform healthcare education.
GAYAZA, WAKISO, UGANDA. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned construction of the Karis Medical Hospital and Nursing University, a major health-care investment projected to redefine medical education and service delivery in Uganda.
Located along the Gayaza–Kalagi Road, the multi-billion-shilling facility will feature 125 in-patient beds, modern diagnostic suites (CT & MRI scanners), maternity and neonatal units, intensive-care wards, and a training university for nurses and midwives.
“Private investment in health infrastructure complements government efforts,” Museveni said at the launch ceremony. “When Ugandans invest locally, we save foreign exchange and create jobs.”
The project, spearheaded by entrepreneur Dr. Hiinga Karis, is expected to employ over 1,000 Ugandans when operational in 2027. Officials say the campus will accommodate up to 600 students annually.

Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng praised the facility’s focus on technology-driven care, noting its inclusion of telemedicine and research partnerships with Makerere University and regional hospitals.
The Karis Medical Hospital adds momentum to the country’s post-pandemic health-sector recovery and the drive toward universal health coverage.
