What the Pearl Bank–TotalEnergies Deal Means for Uganda’s Corporate Payments Ecosystem

While individual motorists will feel the convenience of digital fuel payments, the recent partnership between Pearl Bank Limited (formerly PostBank Uganda) and TotalEnergies Uganda is poised to transform corporate payment systems across Uganda. By integrating Pearl Bank’s Wendi digital wallet and card into TotalEnergies’ nationwide retail network, businesses now have access to a modern, efficient, and trackable way to manage fuel expenditures.
Streamlining Fleet Management
Corporate fleet operators often juggle cash, multiple fuel cards, and manual reconciliation processes — a time-consuming and error-prone system. Wendi’s integration provides a digital, real-time solution.

“Corporate clients can now issue Wendi digital cards to drivers or company vehicles, monitor fuel usage in real time, and reconcile payments instantly,” explained Ms. Aisha Nsubuga, Head of Digital Banking at Pearl Bank.
This digitization offers transparency, reduces administrative overhead, and minimizes risk associated with cash handling. Companies no longer need to rely on paper vouchers or multiple bank cards, which can complicate reporting and audit processes.
Cost Control and Reporting
With Wendi, businesses gain granular insights into fuel consumption patterns, enabling better budgeting and cost control. Automated reporting features allow finance teams to track expenditures by vehicle, department, or branch, creating a more accountable and efficient system.
“By integrating digital wallets into corporate workflows, we’re empowering businesses with control and visibility,” said Mr. Julius Kakeeto, Managing Director of Pearl Bank. “This is not just convenience—it’s strategic financial management.”
SMEs and Informal Sector Inclusion
The benefits extend beyond large corporations. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), transport companies, and logistics providers — many of whom operate in cash-heavy environments — can now participate in a regulated digital ecosystem.

“Small transport operators can access digital payments, build financial records, and potentially qualify for credit or insurance products,” noted financial analyst Sarah Kagolo. “This levels the playing field and supports growth for businesses that were previously cash-dependent.”
Enhancing Payment Ecosystem Interoperability
The partnership also aligns with Uganda’s broader digital-payment infrastructure, promoting interoperability between banks, fintechs, and corporate clients. By linking fuel payments with Wendi, Pearl Bank is expanding the corporate digital footprint, creating opportunities for future integrations with payroll, expense management, and loyalty programs.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Pearl Bank and TotalEnergies plan to enhance Wendi’s corporate features:
Customized spending limits per vehicle or driver
Integration with fleet management software

Loyalty and reward programs for corporate users
Potential financing products based on historical usage
For businesses, this partnership signals a major step toward modernizing corporate financial operations, embedding transparency and efficiency into an everyday expense category: fuel.
“Corporate finance is evolving, and we’re ensuring Uganda’s businesses are not left behind,” concluded Mr. Kakeeto.
