Nigeria’s LagosPhoto Biennial Launches With Theme “Incarceration”
Lagos / Kampala
The new edition of the LagosPhoto Biennial opens on 25 October 2025 (running through 29 Nov), marking its transition into a full biennial format. The theme for 2025 is “Incarceration”, exploring visible and hidden forms of confinement across African societies.
Spotlight on the Biennial
Hosted across multiple venues in Lagos and for the first time in Ibadan, the biennial features major solo and collaborative exhibitions by artists such as Ayobami Ogungbe, Geremew Tigabu, Yagazie Emezi and others.
It aims to challenge narratives: How are architecture, migration, memory, social systems and identity connected to the idea of incarceration?
The biennial also includes talks, installations, screenings and special programmes at historical sites—making it a rich mix of art + cultural critique.

Why it matters for Uganda
Uganda’s creatives (photographers, visual artists, curators) have a potential platform to engage with the biennial, build regional partnerships and gain visibility.
The theme “Incarceration” can resonate with Uganda’s own cultural and post-conflict narratives—offering curated opportunities for collaboration.
The growth of African art biennials signals increased global interest in African creative content and the creative economy.
