Uganda Marks World Food Day with Emphasis on Sustainable Farming

Kabarole District, Uganda
In Kabarole District, Uganda joined the global community in observing World Food Day 2025 with a clarion call for sustainable agriculture that protects natural resources while increasing yields and food security.

Under the theme “Boosting Food Production Without Harming the Environment,” government officials, smallholder farmers, civil society, and development partners gathered for a national ceremony. They highlighted that farm productivity must rise but not at the cost of soil degradation, deforestation, or water pollution.

Key Messages & Commitments

Agroecological practices such as intercropping, organic fertilizers, conservation agriculture and agroforestry were heavily promoted.

Stakeholders emphasized strengthening extension services, access to quality seeds, and credit for farmers to invest in sustainable practices.

Ministry of Agriculture pledged to scale programs for climate-smart agriculture in vulnerable regions.

Calls were made for better market linkages and support to farmer cooperatives to absorb surplus and reduce post-harvest losses.

Challenges Ahead

Many farmers still lack access to sufficient irrigation, fertilizer, training, and finance. Climate change — erratic rains and pests — have made yields unpredictable. Without sustained support, gains will be uneven and fragile.

But organizers were optimistic: local innovations and community commitment can help Uganda move toward resilient, sustainable food systems.
