Uganda at 63: A Nation Reflects and Celebrates at Kololo

Kampala, Uganda.
The air was electric with pride, music, and color as thousands gathered at Kololo Independence Grounds today to mark Uganda’s 63rd Independence Day.

Under the theme “Sustaining Progress Through Unity,” this year’s celebrations drew dignitaries, cultural troupes, youth organizations, and citizens from all corners of the country. The grounds turned into a sea of red, yellow, and black as the national flag flew high in the Kampala skies.

A Presidential Address for the Future

President Yoweri Museveni, delivering the keynote address, emphasized the role of unity in national development, urging Ugandans to protect the peace and progress achieved over the decades.

“This independence was not handed to us—it was earned through struggle, resilience, and sacrifice,” he said. “Now, it is our duty to carry this legacy forward with responsibility and unity.”

He also highlighted government priorities including infrastructure, industrialization, and youth empowerment for the next decade.

Culture Takes Centre Stage

No Ugandan celebration is complete without vibrant culture—and this year did not disappoint. Performers from Buganda, Acholi, Ankole, Karamoja, and other regions lit up the stage with traditional dances, music, and dramatic storytelling.

“We’re here to celebrate our roots, to show the world that unity doesn’t mean uniformity,” said Rose Nakitende, a dancer with the Ndere Troupe. “It means bringing our cultures together with pride.”

Voices from the Grounds

From elderly citizens who lived through the transition to independence, to youth dreaming of innovation and reform, the message was clear: Uganda belongs to all Ugandans.

“My grandfather told me stories of 1962. Today I’m living the continuation of that story,” said Joseph, 18, a student from Ndejje.
“Independence is about having the freedom to dream.”

Flawless Coordination Behind the Scenes

Security was tight but efficient, with UPDF and Uganda Police ensuring smooth entry and peaceful proceedings. Emergency response teams and health officials were also on standby, with no major incidents reported.

The Takeaway

Uganda’s 63rd Independence Day was more than a commemoration—it was a vibrant expression of identity, unity, and hope. As the country looks toward its future, events like these serve as both reminders and roadmaps of where it’s headed.

“A united Uganda is a prosperous Uganda.” 🇺🇬
