Bobi Wine Promises to Cut Power Tariffs by Half if Elected

By Urban Gazette Staff | Kampala

At a charged rally in Kyankwanzi, the opposition leader pledges “power for all, not for profit,” vowing to slash electricity costs to ease household and business burdens.

Uganda’s leading opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, has promised that if elected president, his administration will reduce the national power tariff by 50%. Speaking to thousands in Kyankwanzi District, Kyagulanyi said high electricity costs have crippled both small businesses and industry — and that affordable energy is key to economic liberation.

“We cannot talk about industrial growth or even home comfort when the average Ugandan pays nearly 1,000 shillings per unit of power,” he said. “In the New Uganda, that ends.”

He called on supporters to turn up “in record ” during the coming polls, warning against complacency and alleged electoral manipulation.

Analysts note that while the pledge could resonate deeply with Uganda’s urban poor, it would require massive state restructuring of energy subsidies and regulation — a task critics say could strain the budget.

Bobi Wine vows to cut Uganda’s electricity tariffs by half if elected, promising cheaper energy for homes and industries.
