Kampala Rolls Out Free Medical Camps Ahead of City Festival

KAMPALA – In preparation for the much-anticipated Kampala City Festival, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has launched a series of free medical camps across all five city divisions. These camps offer a wide range of services including HIV testing, malaria screening, diabetes and hypertension checks, family planning, and nutrition assessments.

The medical outreach is part of the pre-festival engagements under the theme “Innovation, Culture, and Sustainability”, aimed at building a healthier and more resilient urban community. The initiative has already drawn thousands of residents, especially in underserved areas like Kawempe and Makindye.

Rotary Bulindo Hosts Largest-Ever Free Medical Camp, Targets 1,000 Residents Bulindo residents over the weekend received free health care as the Rotary Club of Bulindo rolled out its most ambitious medical outreach since its founding seven years ago. The two-day camp, held on August 23–24 at St. Francis Primary School in Bulindo, brought together doctors, health workers, and volunteers offering services ranging from medical consultations and treatment to cancer screening, dental care, blood donation, immunization, and counseling. More than 1,000 people were expected to benefit. Rotary Club of Bulindo President, Paul Percy Lubega, said the initiative reflects Rotary’s core mission of fighting disease and serving the community. “Rotary works to fight disease as one of its key focus areas. By setting up this camp, we are giving people an opportunity to be treated, diagnosed, and checked for various conditions at no cost. Our obligation is to serve, and we hope to reach over 1,000 residents by the time the camp closes,” Lubega explained. He noted that this year’s camp was not only the largest ever, but also the most comprehensive. “We are offering immunizations, counseling, mental health services, blood donation, and screenings for major illnesses. This is the most comprehensive medical outreach we have ever held, and our ambition is to make it an annual event,” Lubega added. For many residents, the camp was a welcome relief from the high costs of private hospitals. Noeline Gokyalya, a mother from Bulindo, said the outreach gave her children access to care she could not otherwise afford. “My children have been able to access sickle cells checkup, and medicine for deworming. This initiative has also helped our family access free medicine which I couldn't afford in hospitals,” she shared. Starvin Mpumule, a student, also benefited. “We are so grateful for what Rotary has done for us. Normally, medical tests are very expensive in hospitals, and many people here cannot afford them. This camp has been a blessing, and we hope it continues to reach other communities as well,” he said. The camp was supported by partners including C-Care and IMC Teams, and organizers hope to build on its success in future. Beyond health interventions, Rotary Bulindo, part of District 9213, has been active in long-term community projects such as water supply facilities at Mbogo Primary School, tree planting, and construction of a multipurpose hall that will soon be commissioned. The club has also expanded its presence through new Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact chapters in schools. Looking ahead, Lubega revealed that the club is spearheading the establishment of a neonatal facility in Kasangati to support young mothers and infants with complications. Community members praised the camp as more than just a medical event—describing it as a reminder that Rotary remains a trusted partner in local development.
