Riek Machar’s Treason Trial Begins in Juba

South Sudan’s suspended First Vice President Riek Machar appeared in court today for a treason trial in Juba. Alongside seven co-accused, including a cabinet minister, Machar faces charges of murder, conspiracy, treason, and crimes against humanity.

The government alleges his involvement with the White Army militia, which attacked a military base in March. Machar’s lawyers argue the trial breaches the 2018 peace deal protections.

International observers fear the trial could destabilize South Sudan’s fragile unity government.
