Kampala Boda-Boda Sector Sees Safety Overhaul
Kampala, 22 September 2025
Kampala’s boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) sector, long criticized for accidents and traffic congestion, is undergoing a safety overhaul led by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in partnership with the Ministry of Works and Transport.
Key Measures:
Mandatory driver registration and safety training.
Enforcement of helmet laws and speed limits.
Designation of special boda lanes on high-traffic routes to reduce congestion and collisions.
Introduction of digital fare tracking for transparency and accountability.
Boda Rider Perspective:
“We now have proper lanes and training. It’s safer for us and for passengers,” said Juma Katumba, a long-time rider in Nakawa division.
Impact: Early reports indicate a 20% reduction in boda-related accidents in pilot areas, with the initiative expected to expand citywide over the next six months.
Why it matters: Urban transport safety affects thousands daily. Reducing accidents, improving traffic flow, and professionalizing the sector enhances both commuter confidence and economic productivity.
