Matooke Prices Triple in Tooro, Ankole & Kigezi

Households across western Uganda are grappling with a surge in matooke (plantain) prices, which have tripled in major markets in Tooro, Ankole, and Kigezi regions. Traders attribute the spike to prolonged dry spells, poor harvests, and rising transport costs.

A bunch of matooke that sold for UGX 10,000 now costs between UGX 25,000–30,000, hitting families that depend on the staple for daily meals. Farmers say the situation may worsen unless rains return consistently.

Economists warn the rising cost of food staples could deepen food insecurity, especially among low-income households already facing financial strain.
