EC Warns Candidates: Bribery Threatens 2026 Elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has sounded a strong warning to aspirants and their supporters against engaging in voter bribery, describing it as a “disease” that undermines Uganda’s democracy and risks nullifying election results.

EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, said bribery not only violates the law but also threatens the country’s peace and stability.

“Do not use money to influence voters. If you win by bribery, your victory can be challenged in court and cancelled. Offenders will be prosecuted,” Byabakama cautioned.

His remarks come as the Commission continues its nationwide nomination exercise ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Byabakama confirmed that nominations for district and city leaders closed on September 5, with municipal and division nominations running until September 10. Sub-county and town council nominations will follow between September 11 and 24.

Presidential nominations are slated for September 23–24 at the Commission’s new headquarters site in Lweza-Lubowa, Entebbe Road.

Aspirants are required to submit at least 100 signatures from 80 districts by September 10 to allow for verification.

Byabakama also reminded candidates to comply with nomination guidelines, including restrictions on convoys and the mandatory advance payment of fees.

The EC has opened a public desk and toll-free lines for complaints, urging Ugandans to channel grievances formally rather than on social media.

“Let us protect the peace and stability we enjoy. Elections should not be a source of chaos,” Byabakama emphasized.
