UNBS Reinforces Mandatory Inspection and Clearance of Imported Goods

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has reminded all importers, clearing agents, transporters, and other stakeholders that imported commodities covered by Compulsory Uganda Standards must undergo inspection and be issued with an Imports Clearance Certificate (ICC) before distribution or sale in the country.

The directive, in line with the Inspection and Clearance of Imports Regulations of 2022, aims to protect consumers from dangerous substandard products while safeguarding the environment.

“All imported commodities covered by Compulsory Uganda Standards must be presented to UNBS inspectors at entry points or points of clearance to ensure that they are inspected and issued with the Imports Clearance Certificate,” said Eng. James Kasigwa, Executive Director of UNBS.

UNBS emphasized that clearing agents must ensure all products under compulsory standards are presented for inspection, including items that may have been missed in the ASYCUDA system.

The agency warned that any imported goods found to have bypassed the inspection and clearance process will be impounded, and the responsible importer or clearing agent will face legal action under applicable laws and regulations.

“We appreciate the efforts of all stakeholders in helping the business community comply with mandatory import inspection and clearance processes,” Eng. Kasigwa added.

UNBS’ move is part of broader government efforts to ensure public health, safety, and environmental protection by regulating the quality of imported goods entering Uganda.
