NRM Candidate Accused of Slapping PM Nabbanja Remanded

The Kibaale Magistrates Court has remanded Onesmus Twinamasiko, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Bugangaizi East, to prison over allegations that he slapped Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during the party’s recent primary elections.

The alleged incident unfolded on July 17, 2025, at the NRM offices in Kakumiro District, shortly after officials announced the hotly contested primary results.

Eyewitnesses claim that Twinamasiko, visibly agitated by the outcome, lashed out in anger and allegedly slapped the Prime Minister in the presence of party supporters and security officers.

Magistrate Nazifah Namayanja described the matter as a serious assault case and ordered Twinamasiko’s remand to Kibaale Government Prison until September 10, when a bail hearing will be considered.

Twinamasiko, however, has firmly denied the allegations, insisting that he did not attack the Prime Minister. His legal team has vowed to challenge the charges.

The dramatic episode has stirred intense debate both inside and outside the ruling party, with critics pointing to worsening discipline during internal elections.

It has also reignited discussions about the adequacy of security arrangements for top government officials during political events.
