Gas Explosion at Banda Hostel Leaves Six Injured, Five Kyambogo Students Among Victims

A gas explosion rocked Sports Pro Hostel in Banda Zone Nine, Nakawa Division, on Monday night, leaving six people critically injured, including five Kyambogo University students.

According to eyewitnesses, the blast is suspected to have been caused by a student cooking inside her room.

The explosion ripped through the ground floor of the three-storey building, blowing doors off their frames, smashing windows, and injuring occupants as well as passersby.

Among those in critical condition is Frank, the hostel’s security guard, who was rushed to a nearby clinic before being transferred to Naguru Hospital.

The student victims include Flavia Chelangat and Florence Akello, while the identities of three others had not been established by press time.

Police quickly sealed off the scene and deployed fire and rescue teams to contain the situation.

“Our officers responded promptly, secured the area, and evacuated the victims for treatment,” said Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.

The injured were admitted to Naguru Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital, where they remain under treatment.

Onyango noted that although the damage to property was extensive, swift police intervention helped avert further tragedy.

Investigations into the exact cause of the explosion are ongoing.
