Over 70% of Working Ugandans Risk Contracting Non Communicable Diseases

Health Experts in the Management and Treatment of Non Communicable Diseases have advised Ugandans to avoid over sitting in one posture for they risk contracting diseases that result from body nerve inactivity.

Speaking at the opening of the 3rd edition of the Human Resource Managers’ Association Sports Gala held at Mukerere University Business School (MUBS)Nakawa Friday Aug 23. 2025,Dr Nobert Moris Kasibante,an ICU specialist at C-care IHK Hospital said,”sitting more than six hours daily over months puts one at higher chances of contracting at least 12 of the 45 globally recognized Non Communicable Diseases”.

“Doing regular body exercises that lead to body sweating reduces body fats and also puts to use consumed sugars”.Dr Nobert Moris Kasibante adds.

He further explained that most working Ugandans in offices sit at their workstations from morning to evening.They only get up when going for lunch while to others,lunch finds them at their desks,this behavior puts them at high risk of becoming obese.

Dr. Kasibante says,”activities like this Sports Gala organized by employees under their umbrella body-Human Resources Sports helps employees get an opportunity to exercise their bodies and he urges them never to eat fatty foods every after such exercises”.

The Vice President Business Development at UMC Victoria Hospital Aman Mehta said “sports activities of this nature are very important health therapies since they create moments of breaks between work and life, a recommendation of health practitioners to employees working long hours and end up with stress burden”.

Mehta further remarked ,”apart from solving mental stress,back pain due to long sitting hours,sight difficulties due to long hours of computer use,others complications can also addressed”.

Mehta advises people to avoid consistent use of elevators,to instead use steps while climbing sky scraper buildings,this gives them an opportunity of exercising their bodies.

He also discouraged office employees sitting on rolling and wheel chairs,as such tendencies breed laziness as opposed to activeness while at work.”

Ronald Bbosa,the President Human Resource Managers’ Association of Uganda,the lead organizer said,” under our theme for this year ‘Productive workplaces and healthier choices’ we aim at complementing Government efforts in reducing Non Communicable Diseases most of which are silent killers.”

“We know that Human Resource professionals are at the centre of leading Productivity at Workplaces but unfortunately cannot realize this while leading employees that are unhealthy”

Sports activities like, Football,Netball,Rugby,Chess,Ludo,Basket ball, Athletics and others were among those competed in with a number of Trophies and other awards given to the winning Teams.

Blood donation was ongoing at the Gala since blood availability reduces whenever students get holidays like now,this has been spearheaded by Uganda Red Cross Society.
