UPDF Peacekeepers Urged to Stay Vigilant as Al-Shabaab Threat Persists in Somalia
Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) have been reminded that their mission in Somalia demands unwavering vigilance, with commanders warning against any lapse in discipline as the deployment enters its second half.
Addressing officers and men at the unit’s headquarters, Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, the UNGU-XI Commander, praised the achievements made so far but insisted that the progress could be undone if complacency sets in.
“We have made significant progress so far, but we cannot afford to relax,” he told the troops. “Our enemy of peace, Al-Shabaab, is constantly observing our activities and waiting for an opportunity to strike. We must remain alert and proactive to prevent any surprises.”
Leadership and Discipline
Lt Col Barigye stressed that commanders must carry the responsibility of instilling discipline and focus at all times.
“As leaders, it is our duty to ensure soldiers understand the importance of their role in peacekeeping and the risks involved. We must lead by example and maintain the highest standards,” he emphasized.
Intelligence as a Shield
Backing up his remarks, Captain Joseph Maada, the Military Intelligence Officer, underlined the critical role of intelligence in protecting both troops and installations. He reminded the meeting that timely information is key to anticipating enemy plans and neutralising threats before they materialise.
Mid-Mission Reset
The briefing brought together company commanders, departmental heads, and shift leaders in what was described as a mid-mission reset, aimed at reinforcing operational readiness, sharpening discipline, and strengthening command responsibility.
With Al-Shabaab still active despite recent setbacks, the warning highlights the fragile security environment in Somalia and the continued vigilance required of peacekeepers tasked with maintaining stability.
