Hoima Police Recover 11 Stolen Cows After Suspects Flee Scene
Hoima City police have recovered eleven cows believed to have been stolen from Kakumiro District, following a tip-off from vigilant residents that forced the suspects to abandon the animals.
Julius Hakiza, spokesperson for the Albertine Region police, confirmed the recovery, noting that the cattle are currently being held at Hoima City Central Police Station.
“We currently have eleven cows at Hoima City Central Police Station. Preliminary investigations indicate that these animals were stolen from Kakumiro District and were likely en route to Hoima City abattoir for slaughter or to other unknown destinations,” Hakiza stated.
According to authorities, the suspects fled when they realized their movements had been detected. Investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible.
Authorities are calling on anyone claiming ownership of the recovered cattle to provide valid documentation, including prior police reports and records, to verify their claims.
“Thorough verification is necessary to prevent fraudulent claims and ensure that the cows are returned to their legitimate owners,” Hakiza emphasized.
The recovery comes amid a notable increase in cattle theft across the Bunyoro Sub-Region. Police have conducted several operations earlier this year:
March: The Masindi flying squad recovered 24 stolen cows, arresting Lawrence Farouk Busobozi and Alex Mukonyezi. The animals had been taken from Nakasongola, Nakaseke, Kyankwanzi, Luwero, and Kiryandongo districts.
February: Police recovered 14 cows in Hoima City, leading to the arrest of Ronald Katooto, 35, and Godwin Tayebw, 38. The animals were hidden in Kyarwabuyamba cell, Hoima East Division.
Hakiza noted that police are working closely with community leaders to dismantle organized theft rings.
“These thefts not only affect individual farmers but also threaten the economic stability of our communities. Cattle are a critical source of livelihood, and their loss can have far-reaching consequences,” Hakiza said.
Residents are being urged to mark their livestock, keep proper records, and report suspicious activity to authorities immediately.
The recovery of these eleven cows represents another success in ongoing efforts to combat cattle theft in the Albertine and Bunyoro regions, as police continue pursuing perpetrators to justice.
