Former Minister Mary Karoro Okurut Dies at 71
Uganda is mourning the loss of Mary Busingye Karoro Okurut, a towering figure in politics, literature, and education, who passed away at the age of 71.
The news was broken by Margaret Muhanga, State Minister for Primary Healthcare, in a deeply personal tribute:
“With so much pain, grief and sorrow, I announce the death of my ‘bosom buddy’ Mary Karoro Okurut. My literature teacher, my mentor, my very close buddy, my world, my all. So painful to imagine. This is a sting I’ll never forget. May the angels receive her in glory.”
Karoro Okurut’s career spanned decades, marked by her influence both in the classroom and in government.
She served most recently as Cabinet Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister from June 2016, following a tenure as Minister for National Security (2015–2016) and Minister of Gender and Social Issues (2012–2015).
In each role, she was recognized for her firm leadership, advocacy for women, and dedication to national development.
Beyond her ministerial duties, she was the Bushenyi District Woman MP, serving in Parliament for multiple terms. Her presence in the House was defined by her commitment to her constituents and her role as a mentor to many emerging female leaders.
Her political journey faced a turning point in 2020 when she lost the NRM party flag to Annet Katusiime Mugisha, who later secured the seat in the 2021 general elections.
Before her political ascent, Karoro Okurut was a respected educator and accomplished author, with a passion for literature and women’s empowerment. Her influence extended beyond policy-making, inspiring generations through her teaching, writing, and mentorship.
Her passing leaves a void in Uganda’s political and cultural fabric, but her legacy as a leader, trailblazer, and visionary will endure for years to come.
