35 Suspects Held in Katwe Over Boda Boda Thefts and Attacks
KAMPALA – A police swoop in Katwe has netted 35 suspects accused of belonging to gangs responsible for a spate of motorcycle thefts and violent assaults on boda boda riders in Makindye Division.
The arrests came during an intelligence-led operation in Wansanso Zone, Kibuye II Parish, on August 12, 2025. Police say the crackdown focused on garages believed to be handling stolen motorcycles and spare parts.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire said the move followed growing public alarm over attacks on riders.
“We carried out a targeted operation against criminal gangs allegedly operating from garages in Wansanso Zone. We managed to arrest 35 suspects and recover several exhibits,” Owoyesigyire stated.
Recovered during the raid were nine Bajaj Boxer motorcycles — some bearing registration numbers UFL 083U, UFW 693H, UET 495A, UFU 306W, UDS 592K, UFA 841M, UEL 401N, UFC 050L, and one without a number plate — along with an assortment of motorcycle parts.
Owoyesigyire said all suspects will face charges once investigations are finalised. He added that the police will maintain close coordination with local leaders and vigilante groups to curb the crime wave.
“We are committed to restoring safety for motorcycle operators in the area,” he affirmed.
