2nd Africa Conference on AI in Health in Kampala, Spotlighting Tech for Inclusion

Kampala,Uganda

Makerere University hosted the 2nd “AI in Health Africa” Conference in Kampala earlier this month, under the theme “Setting AI for Sustainable and Inclusive Health Systems in Africa.” Health and technology experts, researchers, and policymakers gathered to discuss how artificial intelligence can strengthen health care systems, especially in under-resourced contexts. During the opening address, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation urged African scientists to move beyond passive tech consumption and embrace active innovation, building home-grown solutions rather than relying solely on imported technologies.

Participants emphasised that AI holds promise in diagnostics, disease surveillance, resource allocation and data-driven health planning — helping to overcome chronic challenges like limited medical infrastructure, staff shortages, and uneven access. The conference reflects broader efforts in Uganda and across Africa to leverage digital and scientific tools to improve public health outcomes.

Why it matters
Using AI in health could dramatically improve disease detection, treatment efficiency, and health-services delivery — particularly in rural or low-resource areas. For Uganda, such innovation could reduce pressure on hospitals, improve preventive care, and support sustainable health-system strengthening. The conference could inspire policies, partnerships, and research that turn technology into accessible solutions for citizens.

What to watch
Follow whether the conference leads to concrete collaborations, funding commitments or pilot projects deploying AI in health facilities. Monitor government announcements on data-protection laws, health-tech regulation, and support for local research institutions. Watch for early results from pilot AI projects — such as improved diagnostics, better disease tracking, or enhanced outreach in hard-to-reach communities.
